GAJA EXPANSION: ALTA LANGA IN THE SPOTLIGHT

IMG_20161002_192006

Alta Langa covers hilly areas in the municipalities of Alessandria, Asti and Cuneo, in the north of Piedmont. It is also a recent Italian DOCG appellation, established in 2011 which centers its identity around sparkling wines made by traditional (classical) method. This appellation covers 80 hectares of vineyards. Anyhow, sparkling wine production is not a new fashion in this part of Piedmont, given that Moscato D'Asti is produced in the vicinity.

Gaja Winery has purchased 30 hectares of land in the area that was previously known mainly for hazelnuts, cheese and truffles. They intend to plant international grape varieties Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc in their vineyards there. The plot with future vineyards is located on the hillsides on the right side of the Tanaro River. Despite rumors that Gaja Winery will start sparkling wine production, Gaia Gaja denounced the news and pointed out that in recent future they will produce varietal, still, elegant white wines with good aging potential. This is also supported by the fact that Gaja's portfolio already includes varietal Chardonnay aged in barrique (Gaia & Rey)  and varietal Sauvignon Blanc aged in barrique (Alteni di Brassica), both carrying Langhe appellation. White wine production at Gaja Winery occupies about 8% of the total production.

Gaja Winery remains focused on Piedmont and Tuscany. The vineyards of Gaja Winery currently include 245 hectares in Barbaresco (100 hectares), Bolgeri (118 hectares) and Montalcino (27 hectares).
