Žilavka from Herzegovina is slowly but surely making its way to the top of the regional wine scene. Foreign wine experts often give the example of Herzegovina as the most dynamic wine region of former Yugoslavia, which is building up its unique wine identity by taking big steps. Žilavka from Herzegovina impressed not only wine experts, but also local writers, so even Danilo Kiš mentions this grape in his novels...
Čitluk Winery is the largest winery in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The total capacity of the winery is 110,000 hectoliters, while the vineyards are spread over 5 locations with a total surface of 400 hectares. Generally, there is a growing trend in Europe of large wineries famous for mass production of affordable wines turning towards limited editions of upscale wines for consumers with advanced wine culture. Indeed, wine culture is developing across the Balkans, so Čitluk winery is simply following the market with focus on more demanding consumers.
A special line of wines called Teuta (Illyrian queen who opposed authority of Roman Empire and ruled the territory from Herzegovina to Epirus) represents typical grape varieties of Herzegovina (Žilavka, Trnjak, Blatina, Plavac Mali) from selected vineyard plots and from the best quality grapes from vineyards owned by Čitluk Winery.
Teuta Žilavka Selection 2017 from Čitluk Winery leaves a lush, ripe impression on the nose, a predominantly fruity aromatic profile dominated by ripe yellow fruit, peach, apple, honey, kiwi. On the palate, a clear mineral trace, tamed acidity, flavours of peach, apricot, wet stone. Medium body.
Rating: 86/100
