A few years ago, an article in the local daily newspaper announced a project funded by the European Union which aimed at establishing a glass recycling system in Serbia. Until then, it didn't make any sense to collect glass waste given that Paraćin Glass Factory founded in the times of former Yugoslavia was in the process of privatization, facing numerous problems, so it didn't have capacity to buy and recycle glass waste. Owing to the fact that I give my significant contribution to production of packaging glass waste (i.e. empty wine bottles), this news put a smile on my face. Finally, I got the impression that I was doing something useful by separating empty wine bottles for recycling and turning them into new glass products. So, I called the recycling company to ask where I can deposit empty bottles, and their response was quite shocking: the one and only recycling container in Belgrade was located in the Serbian Government building. They haven't placed these recycling containers anywhere else. Yeah, the easiest way to show to EU officials who come to control where the EU money was spent is to take them directly to the government building so they can see the "single" glass waste container in Belgrade. Honestly speaking, I doubt that I would be allowed to knock at the door of the Serbian Government with a sack full of empty wine bottles ... All this affair smelled quite fishy: someone took the money from the European Union, and all that remained was a glass recycling container placed in the Serbian Government building (?! ?).
And a few years later, the number of empty bottles on the balcony of my apartment has multiplied. Now it has already become a matter of typical Serbian defiance because once you have collected more than 300 wine bottles, you hesitate to dump them in a waste bin with other types of waste, as they could be used again... So, I waited patiently and waited...and waited... The neighbours have already started casting strange looks at me (they must have noticed a pile of empty bottles on my balcony that continued to grow). Over time, I have begun to develop a sort of bond with these empty bottles: every label conjured up a particular occasion, a group of people that the bottle was shared with or a particular wine region/winery that I visited ...
Recently, however, a miracle happened in Serbia. You may have already noticed, glass waste containers have appeared on the streets of Belgrade. What a joyful moment! Finally, all the bottles on my balcony that once contained wonderful varietal wines and blends can be recycled. The company Sekopak in cooperation with the PUC Sanitation dispersed glass recycling containers across the city centre (with appealing design that does not spoil the aesthetics of the city) at the following locations:
