In keeping with a tradition dating back to 1945, every year a famous artist has complete freedom to create a wine label for the next vintage of the Chateau Mouton Rothschild wine that is coming to market.

This year, the owners of Chateau Mouton Rothschild have hired Chinese painter and writer Xu Bing, born in 1955 in Chongqing. In his works, he creates artwork that is strongly influenced by language, calligraphy and current social themes of the contemporary world.

His works represent a meeting of cultures, because he created a unique calligraphic expression in which Latin letters are represented according to the rules of Chinese calligraphy. Accordingly, the new label Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2018 shows his work representing two written words: Mouton and Rothschild. He personally designed the characters, and if you observe carefully, you can discern individual letters in the same way that a wine lover discovers individual aromas and flavors in wine.
