wine identity

In quest for wine identity of Serbia and the Balkans... This is a summary of the main discussion point that will bring together wine professionals, oenologists, winemakers, sommeliers, wine critics and journalists on 14th June, 2014.Venue: Hotel Falkensteiner, Belgrade

Website Vinopedia.rs and wine-gastro magazine Vino & Fino will organize a conference dealing with local grape varieties, authentic wines and wine identity of Serbia and the Balkans. Beside local winemakers and oenologists, we will exchange opinions (and taste selected wines) with special guests: Jo Ahearne MW, Marina Cvetić, Zoltan Szabo, Saša Špiranec, etc.

An entire day will be packed with lectures, panel discussions and Masterclass workshops where even the most discerning and demanding wine connoisseurs will find exclusive wines that will suit their palate and hear premiere information from the wine world.

Jo Ahearne MW, oenologist and consultant from Great Britain, Master of Wine, during her first visit to Serbia and the first encounter with Serbian wines and wine-makers, will attampt to solve the ever-present dilemma of winemakers whether they should pursue international or local style of wine. Beside selected wines from Serbia, Jo Ahearne will also present wines from other corners of the globe and thus make a parallel together with us.

Jo Ahearne MW

Marina Cvetić, owner of the famous Italian winery Masciarelli, will present on the example of Abruzzo wine region how the Italians managed to turn this region into a jewel and pride of Italian winemaking and share with us some ideas which Serbian winemakers could also implement in the days to come.

Zoltan Szabo, oenologist and wine expert from Hungary will take us on a historic journey through this corner of Europe and show us how Kadarka or Skadarka travelled back and forth and still survives in Hungary and Serbia and undergoes a period of renaissance.

The Serbian rising star , His Majesty Prokupac, occupies a special place in the conference program. It will be an extraordinary opportunity to assess potential of this variety with Igor Luković and check whether it can be Serbian entry ticket into the world of great wines by means of vertical tasting of Prokupac wines from Ivanović winery as well as horizontal tasting of Prokupac wines which can be found today on the market in Serbia.

Tomislav Ivanović accompanied with Serbian sommeliers and winemakers who represent the contemporary Serbian wine scene will present Wine Mosaic project and attempt to define in a panel discussion what makes wine identity of Serbia and the role of local varieties in affirmation of Serbian wineries.

And a real jewel for the end, for the first time in Serbia, you will have an opportunity to taste wine produced from Turkish variety Papazkarasi in Chamlija Winery. A recent DNA study has shown that this variety represents a natural cross between Prokupac and a white variety from Romania.

And there is more to come…

But you have been probably wondering how to join this quest for answers related to further development of Serbian wine scene… A few more available seats remain and with a day-pass which costs 20 EUR (in RSD countervalue) you will get an opportunity to attend all events on the programme of Wine Identity 2014 conference.
