LIVE FROM BIWC - SOFIA 17.06.2012

The second day of BIWC started with Serbian wines in the spotlight. Stevan Rajta, our sommelier who gained work experience in UK, USA, France and Italy, presented a selection of top Serbian fine wines at the Master Class workshop.

After a brief presentation of Serbia's wine regions and history of wine-making in Serbia, Stevan led all present through Serbian vine-growing areas with pearls of modern Serbian wine-making. Mr Saša Špiranec, consultant in the company Vinart doo Zagreb and author of Croatian Wine Guide, Ms Christy Canterbury, Master of Wine from USA, Jamie Arajo, consultant from TerraVina company, were among those interested to get acquainted with Serbian wines. The following wines were presented during the Master Class workshop:

1. Podrum Aleksandrović – Trijumf 2010

2. Vinarija Kovačević – Sauvignon Blanc 2009

3. Vinarska kuća Spasić – Tamnjanika 2010

4. Vinarija Budimir – Tamjanika Vera 2009

5. Podrum Aleksandrović – Trijumf Noir 2008

6. Vinarija Kovačević – Aurelius Barrique 2005

7. Vinarija Budimir – Sub Rosa 2007

8. Mali Podrum Radovanović – Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2008

9. Vinarija Zvonko Bogdan – Cuvee No. 1 2008

And again, the history is repeating, as it turned out that some bottles of wine had misteriously disappeared again. Unfortunately, this time organizers failed to track them down, so all participants at the workshop missed the opportunity to get acquainted with Chardonnay Selekcija wine from Radovanović Cellar.

At the same time, Miloš Kalapis from Vršački vinogradi winery was giving a lecture on Basics of Wine Tourism in the adjacent hall of Grand Hotel Sofia.

The second day of BIWC was definitely putting Serbia into focus, as another lecture in the afternoon was given by Dušan Jelić, an author of website dedicated to wines of the Balkans www.winesofbalkans.com who stressed the importance of social media in wine industry. At the start of his lecture, he also tackled the issue of the Balkans as an eternal geopolitical metaphore with an attempt to closely explain multilayered symbolism of the term Balkans. Then he drew attention to key principles of social networking and shared tips and advice how to benefit from the power of social media.

Of course, everybody awaited the results of the competition with great zeal. Jury awarded 23 gold medals (10 gold medals for wines from Bulgaria, 7 gold medals for wines from Greece, 3 gold medals for wines from Slovenia, 2 gold medals for wines from Macedonia and 1 gold medal for a wine from Croatia).
