Paris, Montmartre, street musicians, wine, couples in love, artists on the street, romantic bistros and restaurants. This is how most of us imagine a visit to the French capital. However, one of the local attractions of Montmartre is a tiny restaurant that serves wine in baby bottles instead of glasses. I already see frowned faces of sommeliers and wine experts who read this. In baby bottles. So barbaric. Someone would call it another example of marketing madness to lure visitors and catch some attention. However, this madness lasts... Restaurant Le Refuge des Fondus has been working since 1966 and almost every night it is fully booked. To be honest, this is not difficult since the restaurant has only one room lined up with tables from all sides. A cramped room is the reason why guests literally have to climb onto the chair and skip over the table in order to occupy a chair beside the wall (which can be quite a demanding task for girls who come to the restaurant in a tight skirt or dress). The lack of space was the main reason why the restaurant owner decided to offer wine in a baby bottle instead of a glass. Simply, he wanted to avoid dropping glasses and spilling wine during dinner. And also it was a way to avoid paying a city tax for serving wine by the glass. The menu is simple. French version of the fondue (savoyarde or bourguignonne), along with a plate full of charcuterie. The atmosphere is cheerful. In a small room, which is packed with guests already around 19.30h, one can hear relaxed talk, laughter of the guests, noise of cutlery - surely not an ideal place for love couples who want to discover the romantic side of Paris. The house wine comes in baby bottles. Typically, it is wine from the south of France. But, guests do not seem to bother much about not being able to smell wine's aromas on the nose... An original serving suggestion, although winelovers won't be impressed. Guests leave the restaurant only when the owner announces closing. And the story about this particular restaurant is spreading further.
